Hat in Three Stages of Landing
Commissioned in 1978, the Hat in Three Stages of Landing, a site-specific Pop Art sculpture by the world famous artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, was installed at Sherwood Park in 1982. A young Leon Panetta spoke at the ceremony and the Salinas community cheered during the unveiling.
Oldenburg and partner Coosje van Bruggen spent many days exploring Salinas and the Valley and came away with an idea for a monumental sculpture. The artwork would be a hat blown in the wind, celebrating a diverse community that wore hats. Both artists felt that the hat should represent the many cultures in Salinas and celebrate the best of the Salad Bowl of the World.
